Breaking News: MACC Arrests Anwar Ibrahim's Aide Shamsul Iskandar Akin (2025)

Shockwaves Hit Putrajaya: Former Top Aide to Prime Minister Arrested in Corruption Probe

A dramatic twist unfolded today as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained Shamsul Iskandar Akin, a former senior political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The arrest took place when Shamsul voluntarily appeared at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to provide his statement. But here's where it gets controversial — he's being investigated over allegations of accepting bribes from a businessman already under public scrutiny.

According to MACC’s Chief Commissioner Azam Baki, Shamsul was taken into custody at 12:51 p.m. after arriving just before noon at the MACC’s main office. The probe focuses on claims made by businessman Albert Tei, who allegedly confessed to paying Shamsul in exchange for assistance in recovering funds distributed to certain Sabah state assemblymen. These funds, according to sources, were purportedly disbursed for political purposes — a revelation that could have far-reaching implications for Malaysia’s political landscape.

Adding another layer to the unfolding scandal, Azam confirmed that Tei himself was arrested earlier that morning at 10:15 a.m. Meanwhile, another figure, Sofia Rini Buyong, was detained last night around 10:30 p.m. after she arrived at the MACC headquarters to assist investigators. Sofia’s name surfaced after Tei accused her of acting as Shamsul’s proxy — an allegation she has strongly denied.

The Putrajaya magistrate’s court has since approved MACC’s request to remand Sofia for four days, while applications for Shamsul and Tei’s remand orders are expected to be heard tomorrow morning. Azam emphasized that MACC will handle the investigation "professionally and fairly," noting that anyone disputing the arrests may challenge them in court. He added that investigators have been instructed to wrap up their work by the end of this week, so the findings can be swiftly forwarded to the Attorney General’s Chambers for a decision.

In an unexpected twist, Azam also revealed that Tei had previously refused to cooperate with investigators, declining to attend questioning sessions before December 1. "Tei remains a key figure in this investigation," Azam stated. Due to the seriousness of the case, MACC has issued a notice under Section 28A(9) of the Criminal Procedure Code — a provision allowing investigators to restrict an accused person’s contact with lawyers or outside parties during specific stages of detention.

The timing of these developments raised eyebrows, coming just days after Shamsul stepped down as Anwar’s senior political aide. In his resignation, he cited ongoing smear attempts targeting him through various controversies — matters he feared might harm the government’s reputation. Yet, almost immediately after his resignation, new allegations surfaced. Businessman Albert Tei told Malaysiakini he had financed renovation work and purchased furniture, home appliances, and personal items for properties linked to Shamsul, totaling a whopping RM629,000.

To make matters more explosive, Tei even shared screenshots of purported WhatsApp exchanges, claiming Shamsul had requested foreign currency for overseas trips. Whether these messages hold up in court remains to be seen, but they’ve already stirred heated debate across the political spectrum.

And this is the part most people miss — this case isn’t just about one man’s alleged misconduct. It raises pressing questions about political funding, accountability, and how blurred the line between politics and business may have become in Malaysia’s power circles. Should voluntary cooperation with authorities shield someone from arrest? Or does presenting oneself only strengthen the case against them?

Share your thoughts below. Do you think MACC’s recent moves signify a genuine crackdown on corruption — or could this be political theatre ahead of deeper political shifts?
