A Heartwarming Tradition: Uniting for a Cancer-Free Future

In the heart of Miami Shores, a beloved annual event, the Home for the Holidays Walk and Tour, brings neighbors together for a festive celebration with a deeper purpose.
For over three decades, this tradition has raised funds for cancer research, education, and patient care at the renowned Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event, organized by the Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman's Cancer Association, is a testament to the power of community support.
"It's more than just a walk and tour; it's a neighborhood gathering, a holiday party with a cause," shares Cristina Butler, co-chair of the event and co-president of the Heidi Hewes Chapter. "The atmosphere is joyful, with live music, delicious treats, and even a visit from Santa!"
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, heartwarming. The homes featured on the tour are not chosen based on grandeur or opulence. Instead, the committee seeks out quintessential Miami Shores residences that embody the city's unique charm. It could be an architecturally intriguing home, a historic landmark, a newly renovated space, or even a residence where the owners have an intriguing collection.
And this is the part most people miss: the personal connections. Butler recalls attending the tour as a child with her mother and friends, and the excitement of having her parents' home featured. "It's a tradition that brings back fond memories and creates new ones," she adds.
The annual walk and tour is the Heidi Hewes Chapter's primary fundraiser, and its impact is significant. Named after a Miami Shores native who lost her battle with melanoma at just 17, the event raises over $60,000 annually to support cancer research at Sylvester. Past President Nora Tenney notes that the event was started 33 years ago by former chapter president Jane Hinterkopf, who passed away earlier this year.
"The generosity of the Woman's Cancer Association is not just a holiday affair; it's a year-round commitment," says Stephen Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester and executive dean for research at the Miller School. "Their dedication fuels our research, leading to advancements in cancer detection and treatment."
This year's tour featured five beautifully decorated homes, with guests enjoying wine, cheese, and homemade treats as they moved from house to house. Live entertainment, including musicians and a youth orchestra, added to the festive atmosphere. Even Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance!
One of the highlights was a pop-up Bargain Box shop, the thrift store of the WCA. Guests could browse unique finds while supporting a good cause.
The event also provided an opportunity for attendees to engage with one of Sylvester's grant recipients, Anis Ahmad, M.D., an assistant professor of radiation oncology. Dr. Ahmad received the Woman's Cancer Association Pediatric Grant for his research on preventing radiation-induced nephrotoxicity in pediatric cancer survivors.
Since its founding in 1959, the Woman's Cancer Association has donated over $15 million to Sylvester, a testament to their unwavering commitment to cancer research and patient care.
