Geely Xingyuan: The Affordable EV Beating Tesla & BYD in China - Full Review (2025)

Hold onto your seats, because there’s a new electric vehicle (EV) shaking up the market, and it’s not from Tesla or BYD. Meet the Geely Xingyuan, the affordable EV that’s outpacing giants in their own game. But here’s where it gets controversial: could this underdog really dethrone the industry leaders? Let’s dive in.

Launched just 14 months ago, the Geely Xingyuan has already sold over half a million units in China, a feat that’s turning heads across the auto industry. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about the numbers—it’s about how this compact hatchback is redefining what an affordable EV can be. With a starting price of around $9,700 (68,800 yuan), it’s not just competing with the BYD Seagull and Tesla Model Y—it’s outselling them.

Geely Auto, part of the Geely Group (which also owns Volvo, Polestar, and Zeekr), introduced the Xingyuan in October 2024. Since then, it’s climbed to the top of China’s EV sales charts, even surpassing the BYD Seagull and Tesla Model Y in the first half of this year. From January to November, Geely sold nearly 430,000 units, a staggering figure that begs the question: What’s their secret?

Here’s the bold truth: The Xingyuan offers incredible value for its price. Built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture-Entry (SEA-E) platform, it combines cutting-edge technology with practical features. For instance, it boasts a 14.1-inch infotainment display, an 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster, and a spacious interior that rivals larger cars like the Volkswagen Golf. Plus, it offers two CATL lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery options—30 kWh and 40 kWh—delivering up to 410 kilometers (254 miles) of range on China’s CLTC cycle.

But let’s address the elephant in the room: Is range anxiety still a thing in China? With the world’s largest EV charging network—two chargers for every five cars—even a modest range like the Xingyuan’s becomes less of a concern. Meanwhile, gas station closures are becoming a real issue for traditional car owners. So, who’s really feeling the anxiety now?

The Xingyuan also outshines competitors with its rear-wheel-drive chassis and independent rear suspension, a rarity in affordable superminis. Compare that to the BYD Seagull’s front-wheel-drive and torsion-beam suspension, and you start to see why the Xingyuan is pulling ahead.

Of course, no car is perfect. The Xingyuan lacks features like rear wipers, automatic front wipers, and automatic air conditioning. But when you consider the overall package—its price, technology, and space—these omissions feel like minor trade-offs. And the sales numbers don’t lie: over 500,000 units sold in just over a year.

If this trend continues, the Xingyuan could end the year as China’s top-selling EV and even challenge the Tesla Model 3 globally. But here’s the controversial question: Can an affordable, no-frills EV truly compete with luxury brands like Tesla in the long run? Or is this just a temporary victory?
