The Legacy of Jazz at The Old Duke
A group of talented jazz musicians, inspired by the historic Old Duke pub, have embarked on a remarkable journey to recreate the magic of a 1979 LP, 'Jazz at the Duke Volume I'. But here's where it gets controversial... they're not just recreating it; they're adding their own unique twist with 'Jazz at the Duke Volume II', a charitable endeavor to support the Bristol Jazz Festival, which faced postponement in 2025 due to funding challenges.
Some of the original musicians who graced the first album have returned, bringing a sense of continuity and nostalgia to the project. Andy Leggett, a musician who performed on both live tracks, shares his excitement: "I hope this album proves that jazz is very much alive and kicking. I never imagined we'd be creating a sequel when we recorded the original."
The Spark of Inspiration
The idea for this ambitious project was ignited by record producer and jazz musician Joe Trudgeon. After discovering a copy of the original LP in a charity shop, he recognized the names of several fellow musicians, sparking the desire to pay homage to this musical legacy. Joe emphasizes the importance of this project, especially given that some of the original musicians are no longer with us. "It's a way to ensure their memory and talent are not forgotten."
Co-producer and musician Paul Archibald adds a layer of context, highlighting the significance of the Old Duke as one of Britain's oldest jazz venues, a true legacy in the music industry. "It's an honor to be part of this project, and who knows? Maybe in another 40 years, someone will discover our album and feel inspired to create Volume III."
This initiative not only celebrates the rich history of jazz in Bristol but also serves as a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and support important causes.
