Just like that, True Detective: Night Country has now reached its dramatic end, with loose ends being tied up and some questions still circulating in our minds. Nonetheless, it was a truly fitting ending to a mind-bending fourth instalment in the hit detective anthology series.

The final episode saw some fitting musical accompaniments, with one of the finale's most dramatic moments unfolding against the backdrop of a song by Canadian Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

Similarly, the first episode's Twist And Shout came back to haunt us as we ventured back to the TSALAL research unit, and series composer Vince Pope offered up an eerie and satisfying end with a final piece of music that left viewers reeling from everything that unfolded in the high-stakes finale.

Previous Night Country episodes have featured the likes of the Spice Girls, Johnny Cash and Georgina Birch, as well as an attention-grabbing title track – Billie Eilish's Bury a Friend.

What is the True Detective theme song in season 4?

The theme song for True Detective: Night Country is Bury a Friend by pop superstar Billie Eilish.

The track was first released in 2019, becoming a breakout hit from the musician's debut studio album (When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?) and peaking at number six on the UK singles chart.

Night Country showrunner Issa López has revealed that Bury a Friend was a major source of inspiration for her during development on the new season.

"Billie's irony and melancholy and poetry informed a lot of what was happening in the series," she told IndieWire. "And then that particular song, it was so weird because I thought of the tongue and burying a friend and stepping on glass – all of the things that are in the show.

"Then as I was writing, I started to pay attention to the lyrics, and I was like, 'That's insane. That's insane that one by one, all the elements of the series are in the song.'"

The True Detective theme song has been a coveted gig since the first season, which thrust The Handsome Family's 2003 country song Far From Any Road into the limelight more than a decade on from its initial release.

Nevermind by Leonard Cohen and Death Letter by Cassandra Wilson (a Son House cover) were the opening tunes for seasons 2 and 3 respectively.
